Polishing

Diamond and WC wire dies are used for drawing several types of metals for different applications. Copper wire is used for motors and electrical transmission. Tungstun is drawn for lighting filaments; steel for tire cord and fencing. As the die becomes worn, dimension and finish are lost and the dies are usually refurbished. This consists of reshaping the die to achieve a new diameter and profile then polishing to achieve a final surface finish.

Diamond: Generally metal and resin type powders. Some diamond suspensions.

Sizes:
10-20um to 40-60um: Shaping: Need high MRR (sharp edges/corners) 1-3um to 6-12um: Finishing: Good MRR and surface finish. 0-1/4um to 0-1um: Polishing: good surface finish/no oversize.

Techniques:
Oscillating wire: Traditional/coat wire with diamond paste. Ultrasonic: Faster method/ uses diamond in suspension.
