11V9 Cup Wheel for grinding WC
inserts.

Diamond, Borazon CBN and WC inserts (as pictured left) are used for milling and machining a wide variety of parts and materials. An important characteristic of the performance of the insert is the edge chamfer which is applied to the tool. It has been shown that the quality of the insert edge has a direct affect on the surface finish of the machined part as well as the life of the insert itself. Vitreous and resin bond wheels are the most common types of wheels for edge prep. Monocrystalline diamond in sizes larger than 10 um is typically used in the wheels.

Evaluation of 6A2 Face-Grinding Wheels
Bond: Vitreous Machine: Ewag RS-15
Edge quality: GE MBM superior to competitive
Removal rate: GE MBM 15% higher.

Objective:
Evaluate PCD grinding performance of 6A2 3/4inch wide face-grinding wheels containing 15-25um GE and competitive metal micron diamond products respectively in an Ewag machine.

Grinding CTQ’s:
- Edge quality
- 0.0005in. Max. chipping at 50X
- Removal rate or grind efficiency
- Wheel life or Grinding ratio
- Dressing response

Test Conditions:
Machine : EWAG RS-15
Wheels were tested in random order.
Each wheel test was repeated once.
PCD Type and size: Compax 1500, 8Wx 1.6Tx 18L, mm
Truing tool: 230/270 diamond nib; Truing rpm = 1500
Wheel face straightness and run out was less than 0.0005”
Dressing stick: SiC, 400 grit; 0.5”x0.5”x4.0”
Dress stick amount: 0.040in.
Grind rpm and Dress rpm: 2200
Grind pressure setting: 4bar
Oscillation setting: 8 Infeed / pass: 0.0005in., fed at both ends of wheel stroke.
Number of passes: 20
Total machine infeed in 20 passes: 0.01” (0.254mm)
Spark out passes: 10
Coolant: Frigisol at 3% concentration
Coolant applied inside of wheel hub.

Results:
- Edge quality: Wheels with GE diamond produced superior edge quality compared with wheels using competitive diamond.
- Removal rate or grind efficiency: Removal rate using GE diamond was 15% higher than those using competitive diamond.
- Wheel life or Grinding ratio: Same for all wheels.
- Dressing response: Same for all wheels.
