Why is size important?
In free abrasive applications, size affects...

Material Removal Rate: distribution of sizes within a grade determines the number of contact points with workpiece.

Surface Finish: crystal size determines the magnitude of "peak to valley" features inscribed into workpiece.

Broad PSD’s
- Fewer contact points.
- Non-uniform finish.

Narrow PSD’s
- More contact points.
- Uniform finishes.

"Size" Measurement Important considerations...
Superfines low quality diamond, On-size high quality diamond, and Oversize low quality diamond.

GE process designed to eliminate superfines and oversize!

How are Micron Powders Specified?

Coulter Multisizer II
- For sizes coarser than 2 to 4 microns.
- Consistent analysis procedures.
- Statistics based on population or volume distribution.
- Mean size range.
- Maximum standard deviation or percentiles.
- Oversize limits.

Microtrac X-100 / Horiba LA 910
- For sizes 2-4 microns and finer.
- Consistent analysis procedures.
- Statistics based on volume distribution.
- Mean size range.
- Maximum standard deviation.
- Oversize limits.
